Wednesday, June 24

Summer Solstice Celebration

Enjoy the Summer Soltice ceremonial dances at San Juan Pueblo, known as Ohkay Owingeh. in Tewa, the native tongue, Ohkay Owingeh means "place of the strong people."

The Pueblo of Ohkay Owingeh was first settled around 1200 AD by ancestral Pueblo People. In 1598, Don Juan  de Oñate visited the region and claimed the region for the Spanish Crown. Nearby the confluence of the Rio Chama and the Rio Grande, Oñate established the first Capital  of New Mexico near present-day Espanola. He renamed the pueblo after St. John the Baptist, his patron saint.

On June 24, the Pueblo celebrates the feast of Saint John the Baptist with a crafts fair and ceremonial dances. Feast Day is a vibrant time for non-natives to partake of the food, arts and culture of the Indian world. Visitors can purchase native crafts and eat traditional foods. During the course of the day visitors can observe the Corn Dance, Buffalo Dance, and the Comanche dance which commemorates the long history of cultural exchange between the Pueblo and the Plains Indians.

Thursday, June 25

Explore Old Town Albuquerque

Get to know the historic heart of the “Duke” City. Although there had been a Spanish-European presence in New Mexico since the mid-1500’s, Albuquerque was not settled until 1706. It was
named in honor of the Viceroy of New Spain after one of his aristocratic titles the Duke of Albuquerque. Thus Albuquerque is nicknamed—The Duke City.

Old Town is a hodge-podge of old adobes surrounding brick patios and Victorian structures representing its history under Spanish, Mexican and American flags. Like most traditional Spanish villages, Old Town Albuquerque is built around a central plaza, known as la placita. The plaza is dominated by the ancient adobe church of San Felipe Neri. Over the centuries, Old Town has been partially-destroyed by the seasonal flooding of the Rio Grande. The church in its present location
was rebuilt in 1793. Currently, Albuquerque is the most populous city in the state of New Mexico,
and the 32nd-largest city in the United States.

On this field trip we will experience a docent-led tour of the Albuquerque Museum of Art and History, savor lunch at a local restaurant, and enjoy some free time for shopping and sight-seeing. Admittance to Museum to be paid by participants.

The Convention will be held in the Sandia Room at the Best Western Rio Grande
