THE 12th HOUSE

INTRODUCTION
The 12th house is the last house of the zodiac. It has been said that it represents a synthesis of the other 11 houses. In fact, many things have been said, or guessed at, concerning the 12th house. Most astrologers and students are fascinated by it. It is mysterious, secretive and enigmatic.
It is our task to delve into the 12th house; to examine its features and possibilities. Of interest are planets in the natal 12th house. We will give personal examples where possible, as well as those of public figures with planets in their natal 12th house and examine various manifestations of these planetary energies as filtered through the 12th.
KEYWORDS FOR THE 12TH HOUSE: hidden things, disappointments, astral entities, secret enemies, confinement, prisons, hospitals, institutions, dreams, psychic energy, the sub-conscious or unconscious mind, self-sabotage, self-defeating behavior, self-undoing, service or suffering (there is a choice), repression, frustration, childhood influences or attitudes (often subconscious) from the past, the shadow self, the ‘secret self,’ charity (given and received), karma (the law of cause and effect).

THE SUN IN THE 12th HOUSE
THE SUN: is a vital and convertible planet. It is masculine, positive and electric. It rules the heart and the electrical energies on which the vitality depends. In Hermetic astrology, the Sun is the ego – defined as the divine spark of deity. It often represents the father. In women’s charts it can also represent the men in her life. It rules the sign Leo and the POWER URGES. Its best quality is RULERSHIP; worst quality is DICTATIVENESS. It is best expressed as VITALITY.*
THE SUN – KEY WORDS: The will, power, life force, the outer identity – what others see, recognition, authority, authority figures, male energy, the yang – the masculine active principle in our lives.
HOW THE SUN MANIFESTS IN THE 12TH HOUSE
Below are Sun in the 12th House tales from some of our Hermeticians contributing to this project:
- When it comes to recognition…it all seems to go down and fall apart really quite quickly, where others seem to steam ahead on far less talent. Indeed my Mom herself is with a Sun in the 12th House and has had a life pretty much the same with respect to her natural artistic gifts. The Sun in the 12th to me means that you can be your own worst enemy, the self-undoing as well as the secret enemies (who may indeed not even know that they are reacting to you in the way that they do).
- I think the 12th House is hard to talk about as it is so secretive. Our ghosts in the closet type of memories live in this house. Yes, I have secret enemies. Love and empathy hide sorrows. Depths of understanding are available from the connection to the unconscious. I think, from firsthand experience, that young children with a prominent 12th House are at risk for nightmares and hidden fears. Imagery, visualizing creatively, imagining, is my happy place. I still face reality, just not head on. It’s been said that fantasy is a human attribute to be fostered, as is artistic ability. At work I’m known for my puppetry and storytelling. I think of the puppetry as a 12th House talent: it is behind the scenes and a disguise of sorts. Also, I give credit to my strong, harmonious 12th House for my ability to connect with young children who are struggling and difficult to understand. Lastly, and most profoundly, is the 12th House rulership over places of solitude. I have lived on a small island off the coast of a rain forest for close to 40 years. I row a little boat to the mainland from home. Going across the rainy water is like a trine line to the sea – from my 12th House to my 4th House.

Sun, Saturn and Neptune are in the 12th House. His Sun, at 12 Pisces, is in the decanate of "Self-Sacrifice."
The Sun is opposition to the Moon which is his most powerful and most discordant planet. Additionally, the Moon is in its Inharmony in Virgo and it is located in the most discordant House in this chart. The Moon is in the 7th forming a T-Square to his ASC, Mercury and Venus in his 1st House, squaring the MC.
He was a reserved, sensitive man by nature (Sun and Neptune in the 12th, and restrictive Saturn). He avoided social contact, was quiet and introspective even in early education.
Early life experiences may have led him on to his most notorious work with deafness, as indeed his own mother suffered from the encroaching and restrictive nature of the disease when he was young. Bell worked to the point of exhaustion with his experiments to overcome deafness. Worried (Pisces 12th) that his work would be discovered by others he hid his notes by locking them away (a 12th House concern; also, having secret enemies is associated with the 12th House).
In fact he did have secret enemies regarding his work, and there was a race to the patent office. Even the US Government moved to annul Bell's patent on grounds of fraud that went to the Supreme Court and after long legal battles even leaving it as undecided—it's all a bit 12th House, especially with restrictive Saturn, vague Neptune and the Sun
Bell married a deaf woman. He was the ultimate researcher (12th House). He became president of the National Geographic Society, following his father-in-law. Bell turned their newsletter into an international magazine, which survives to this day. He believed that the best way to teach geography and nature was through pictures (Neptune in the 12th).

George W. Bush
The Sun and Saturn are in his 12th House, making related events important, difficult and emotional. He lost his sister in his youth (sorrows). He ‘played’ and drank well into his middle years (self-undoing). Eventually he gave up drinking (restrictions). As president, Bush had access to the most sensitive secrets in the world. The World Trade Center terrorist attack (9/11) happened during his watch as president. There was much conflict regarding Iraq’s role, whether Iraq stored weapons of mass destruction, and ultimately the invasion of Iraq and the Iraq war. Some have termed these actions criminal (12th). Bush’s own reaction, after the fact, seems one of disappointment; many American deaths in the Iraq war, the consequences still apparent today. George Bush became a ‘born-again’ Christian, which led to his sobriety. He famously said, regarding Vladimir Putin, that he could see Putin’s soul – a strong 12th House statement.

Miles Davis
The Sun and Mercury are in his 12th House. An innovative American jazz composer and musician, he was a pioneer in the field. Davis led a troubled life. There must be taken into account that much of his trouble was due to being a black man born in the pre-civil rights era. It could be said that he was his own worst enemy (self-undoing). He developed a heroin habit and spent time working as a pimp to support the habit. He had plenty of secret enemies. Other musicians were known to ‘steal’ Davis’ style and make it their own. Davis coined the word ‘cool.’
Other public figures with Sun in the 12th house include: Gandhi, Anne Frank, Alan Leo, Judy Garland and Janis Joplin.

THE MOON IN THE 12TH HOUSE
THE MOON: is a vital, convertible planet. She is magnetic, feminine and negative. Her influence is mediumistic. She rules the fluidic system of the body. In Hermetic astrology, the Moon represents the divine soul, “which, having evolved through countless life forms, attains self-conscious immortality.” She rules the sign, Cancer. The Moon represents mother, and women in the chart. She rules the DOMESTIC URGES. Her best quality is ADAPTABILITY; her worst quality is INCONSTANCY. The Moon expresses as FLUCTUATION.*
THE MOON – KEY WORDS: Moods, emotions, impressionable, feelings, changeable, unpredictable, unconscious mind, mentality, nurturing of self and others.

Queen Victoria of Great Britain
reign 1837 -1901
Victoria’s father died before she was a year old (Sun in the 12th). Her mother kept a close eye on Victoria; it was likened to confinement (Moon in the 12th). The Victorian Era was the time when “the sun never set on the United Kingdom.” Personally and culturally it was a time of strict moral standards (repression – 12th house). Victoria ascended to the throne after a number of monarchs in the line of succession met untimely deaths. During Victoria’s reign, she was often the target of assassins (secret enemies – 12th). Following the death of her husband Albert in 1861, with Venus in the 12th house, Victoria not only grieved, but remained mostly isolated and wore black for the rest of her life. It was like a self-imposed prison. It was rumored she had a ‘secret’ affair with John Brown during this time. He remained close to her until his death.
NOTE: With Gemini in the 12th (Sun, Moon and Ascendant), it is worth noting that Victoria wrote 2500 words a day, every day, in her journals.

John Belushi
His Moon is in the 12th house opposing Uranus. One of the original cast members of Saturday Night Live, Belushi was first generation American from Albanian heritage; suggesting he was raised with a traditional (perhaps old school) view of women. We know little of his relationship with his mother. John Belushi has a twelfth house Moon in Sagittarius, opposite Uranus. This suggests a less emotional, more ‘mental’ maternal experience. It also suggests strong conflict (Moon opposite Uranus) with women. On Saturday Night Live, Belushi was known to sabotage the work of women writers and performers. He did not think women were funny. Ultimately, it was Belushi’s addictions (12th house) that claimed his life.

(see also Uranus)
Moon and Uranus in the 12th with Moon opposite Venus. The Moon rules domestic relationships. In Fawcett's case, the Moon in the 12th opposes Venus, the planet of love and beauty. It also squares Neptune in her 4th house. Her marriage to Lee Majors lasted from 1973 to 1982. It is said the stress of work and trying to expand her career took its toll on the marriage and divorce, given the environment, was a logical astrological outcome (Moon in Cancer in the 12th house of disappointment opposing Venus in Sagittarius in 6th house of work).
It has been noted that her domestic relationships have been physically abusive at times (Saturn, ruler of 7th opposing Mars in the 8th).
She was introduced to Ryan O’Neal by her husband, Lee Majors. The relationship with O’Neal was characterized by storm and strife, mostly ignited by poor choices and drug abuse (Moon in 12th square Neptune in 4th). Given the intensification of her personal instability (worst quality of Moon) she was both emotionally incapable of and unable to attract a stable love interest (Moon opposing Venus). The reports of drug abuse and infidelities are characteristic of the self-undoing so often associated with the 12th house. Though they never married, her relationship with O'Neil was the longest lasting relationship in her life
Other public figures with Moon in the 12th house include: Paul Simon, Liberace, Henry David Thoreau, Abraham Lincoln, and George Bernard Shaw.
❖
MERCURY IN THE 12TH HOUSE
MERCURY: is an intellectual and convertible planet. Its influence is determined by the aspects it receives from other planets. It is masculine, positive and electric when associated with electric planets. It is magnetic and negative when associated with magnetic planets. It rules the tongue, brain and nervous system. Mercury is the messenger, carrying information to and from the brain. It rules the signs Gemini and Virgo and rules the INTELLECTUAL URGES. Its best quality is EXPRESSION; worst quality is RESTLESSNESS. It is best expressed as PERCEPTION.*
MERCURY – KEY WORDS: Thought, communication, perception, ideas, insights, computers, internet, reason.
HOW MERCURY MANIFESTS IN THE 12TH HOUSE
Below are Mercury in the12th House tales from some of our Hermeticians contributing to this project:
- I’ve felt that I needed to write a book, but could never finish what I started – many unfinished projects (Mercury in the 12th). Finally, in my early 60s, I self-published my first book. I still have to get past the constant critic when I write. Journaling has been a constant in my life as well. Also, I have always been able to keep a confidence. I respect others’ secrets as though they were my own. (Mercury and Mars in the 12th house.)
- I think that the 12th house is hard to talk about because it is so secretive. Our ghosts in the closet type of memories live in this house. Depths of understanding are available from the connection to the unconscious. I think, from first-hand experience that young children with a prominent 12th house are at risk for nightmares and hidden fears. (Sun and Mercury in the 12th house.)

Mercury is in the 12th House. Basically, Mercury, co-ruler of Gemini ascendant and conjunct to it, is located in the 12th house, focusing interest on hidden things, secrets, secret intelligence agencies, work behind the scenes, etc. Incidentally, he was using his great intelligence on computer work for the CIA and NSA. For example, he taught officials and military officers in computer security against Chinese hackers (12th house). At the end, his résumé describes him as an expert in cyber counterintelligence. He became aware of a global secret surveillance system (Mercury/12th), had access to a tremendous amount of NSA classified documents and copied them secretly. Here, we could note his double game (Mercury/Gemini/12th), spying the spies! Otherwise, there is an opposition between his Mercury to Uranus in his house of work (6th) describing some personal and intellectual opposition to his own job and also some radical trend leading him to disclose things opposed to his values. In this way, we note Mercury, his mind and personality being faithful to his ethics, in Gemini 2nd decanate, the Dog of Fidelity.
The second ruler of the 12th house is Venus, governing Taurus on the cusp of this house. She is located in the 3rd house in Leo 2nd decanate Reformation and making a sextile (opportunity) to Mercury, linking 12th and 3rd houses. Here, we could appreciate the 3rd house rulership on correspondence, communication, documents, newspapers, news, etc. After taking contacts with important newspapers, the first disclosures started in The Guardian on the 5th of June 2013, when his progressed Mercury in the 2nd decanate of Leo Reformation in the 3rd house was sextile his natal Mercury in the 2nd decanate of Gemini Fidelity in his 12th house. Of course, his actions were a kind of self-undoing (12th), leading him to great limitations (12th), granting him secrets enemies (12th) in the secret intelligence agencies (12th) and precipitating his asylum (12th) applications in foreign countries. Most of these applications were refused meaning disappointments (12th) to him. He was also threatened with decades in jail (12th). Finally, he is hiding (12th) himself in Russia.

Spiro Agnew
Mercury is in the 12th House. The 12th House is the home of secret enemies and clandestine activities. Spiro Agnew has only one planet in this 12th house: Mercury, at its detriment at zero degrees Sagittarius. Mercury in the 12th house in general indicates a tendency to discern and speak the thoughts of others, and to act as a spokesman for others. Mercury square Saturn at 27 degrees Leo indicates scheming, dishonesty and trouble resulting from written agreements and legal documents. The weakened position of both planets (both in detriment) could explain the long delay in uncovering Agnew’s dishonesty. It might explain his rise to a high position (Vice President of the United States), also, before the truth about him came to light.
Mercury sextile the Midheaven is indicative of skill in communicating with people in high positions. Since Spiro Agnew resigned as vice president under a cloud, ostensibly to avoid criminal prosecution, his natal aspect of Mercury square Uranus shows relevance. People born with this aspect have a strong tendency to use good insight unwisely, and to act on ideas that prove harmful in the long run. His Sun conjunct Venus in the 11th house shows a tendency to establish one’s identity through political activities or public service, but also hints at one-sided loyalty in friendships. Agnew remained loyal in his friendship to President Nixon, for example; but Nixon announced that he kept Agnew around for life insurance. That is, no assassin would want to murder the President and be left with Agnew in charge.
Other public figures with Mercury in the 12th house include: Ernest Hemingway, Gertrude Stein. Peter Sellers, Timothy Leary, and Evangeline Adams.

VENUS IN THE 12TH HOUSE
VENUS: is a social and harmonious planet. It is feminine, negative and magnetic. She rules the skin, venous system and internal generative functions and rules the SOCIAL URGES (affection, attraction, and friendship). Her best quality is AFFECTION; worst quality is PLIANCY. Her influence is best expressed as MILDNESS.*
VENUS KEY WORDS: Love, affection, attraction, socializing, friendship, beauty, pleasure, comfort, charm, manners, and money.
HOW VENUS MANIFESTS IN THE 12TH HOUSE
Below are Venus in the12th House tales from some of our Hermeticians contributing to this project:
- As a 12th House Venus, I can attest to the self-undoing of the 12th House, especially if it is your first house ruler. I have always been up and down in weight. It appears that I love pleasure more than looking good. Beauty is a gift that opens doors. And when there is self-respect, the doors can be worth going through. One can miss a great deal through the self-undoing. [I have a picture from my past on the refrigerator to motivate me.] It’s not working too well. (Venus in the 12th House.)

Venus is in the 12th House. Ben is an award winning writer, director and actor. He also has the reputation as quite a “ladies’ man.” He has been in relationships with other actors and celebrities. The most famous was with singer Jennifer Lopez. The celebrity press nick-named them “Bennifer.” It was a very public courtship and they were engaged to be married. The wedding was repeatedly postponed until it was no longer discussed and they went their separate ways. Venus in the 12th House can imply discomfort with romantic feelings. Ben Affleck’s Venus is in Cancer – deeply feeling placement for Venus. It involves several squares and an opposition. In short, relationships can be quite a challenge for him. Not long after the break-up with Jennifer Lopez, Ben met actress Jennifer Garner. They had a low profile courtship and marriage. They have two daughters and are currently divorcing.

Mia Farrow
12th House Venus in Aries opposes Neptune in Libra. Mia Farrow is the child of Hollywood royalty: mother, actress Maureen O’Sullivan; father, writer and director John Farrow. Mia had a troubled childhood. She had polio and was hospitalized in a ward with more severe cases of polio. The isolation and suffering shaped her social consciousness for the rest of her life. She healed and experienced isolation once more in the convent school she attended. Despite early tragedy and the loss of her brother, Mia Farrow gained early fame as an actress on TV drama, Peyton Place and later in the movie Rosemary’s Baby. At the age of 19, she had an affair with Frank Sinatra (29 years her senior). They married two years later; a union that would last only one year. Venus in Aries tends to relish a challenge. When hidden in the 12th House – and opposing Neptune – it’s like a double whammy: The Venusian challenge is vague, perhaps more imagined than real. This is a theme that would play out repeatedly in her relationships. She married and divorced conductor, Andre Previn, then became involved in a long-term, tangled romance with director Woody Allen. Mia was a loving mother to many children, natural and adopted. Years into the relationship with Allen, Mia would discover his affair with her adopted daughter, Soon-Yi. Betrayal can be a Venus in the 12th House theme. But with the opposition to Neptune, it is a possibility that Mia often did not see what was right before her eyes.
Other public figures with Venus in the 12th house include: Barbra Streisand, Jane Fonda, Jimi Hendrix, Grace Kelly, Timothy Leary, and Leonard Bernstein.

MARS IN THE 12TH HOUSE
MARS: is a social and discordant planet. It is masculine, positive and electric. It rules the external sexual organs, the muscles and the sinews. Mars rules the animal appetites, desire and passion and rules the AGGRESSIVE URGES (amativeness, destructiveness, and combativeness, impulsiveness, headstrong and assertive). His best quality is INITIATIVE; worst quality is HARSHNESS. It is best expressed as ENERGY.*
MARS – KEY WORDS: Passion, assertive, aggressive, warrior, brave, courageous, daring, initiative, expression of anger, adventurous, bold, accident prone, action.
HOW MARS MANIFESTS IN THE 12TH HOUSE
Below are Mars in the 12th House tales from some of our Hermeticians contributing to this project:
- I have always had difficulty expressing anger (Mars in 12th). Following a challenging breakup of a relationship, I suppressed the anger until I literally became ill. I had to release the anger in order to heal. It was a form of ‘self-undoing.’ Also, I love dance. I have always wanted to dance. However, I may be the clumsiest person I know. When dancing with a partner, I invariably take the lead and crush his toes on a regular basis.
- My favorite escape has always been to an ashram. I can write more easily there. My busy brain relaxes. And I leave the retreat completely renewed. (Mars & Mercury in 12th)

Johnny Carson
Mars and Sun are in the 12th House. He was born October 23, 1925. His sun is in Libra in the 12th House. His Mars is also in Libra in the 12th House. His Second House is the most harmonious. He made lots of money. Mars in the 12th could be violence behind the scenes. My take on the violence was that it did not have to be physical violence. When Johnny was on vacation from The Tonight Show, one of his guest hosts was Joan Rivers. Her appearances on The Tonight Show gave her a real boost in popularity. It can be argued that Johnny was instrumental in the making of her career as a female stand-up comic. On one appearance, Johnny told Joan that men were interested in a woman's intellect. Joan shot right back with, “No man has ever put his hand down a woman's dress looking for a library card.” This happy relationship would come to an end when Joan was given an opportunity to host her own show. Unfortunately, that show would be at the same time as Johnny's Tonight Show. It was not Joan's choice when the show would air. Joan felt that it would be foolish to turn down such an offer, and she phoned Johnny. I do not remember whether he even spoke to her. Joan's Show did not do well. Johnny never forgave her. Being a Libra, Johnny may not have thought she was playing fair. He probably believed that she should have turned down the show or required that her show not be aired at the same time as The Tonight Show.
Joan Rivers suffered a great tragedy when her husband killed himself. She was not home at the time. Even after suffering such an enormous loss, Johnny never forgave her. He never called her. Joan also believes that for many years he had her blackballed in Hollywood. She thinks he made it difficult for her to get work. Johnny's most powerful sign is Scorpio. It has 211 power, but it is -10.65 in Harmony. Scorpios never forget. They get even. Johnny has his Mars in Libra in the 12th House. I have no idea what Johnny's sex life was like. Since most people’s sex lives are private due to social norms, we may never know.
Johnny's 12th house Mars may represent keeping anger and aggressiveness hidden, and/or a suppressed stubborn refusal to ever speak to Joan Rivers again after she got her own show, when they had been good friends prior and he gave her her start. Due to this suppression, it could be destructive if/when released. He avoided questions about his childhood and his personal life, which I think significant since as a youngster he would have had to learn how to manage his emotions. Given the square with Pluto I expect some control issues were part of the mix, although the trine/sextile to Pluto opposition Jupiter from first house Saturn might temper that. Also, 12th house Mars sextile Venus (ruler 12th) in freedom loving Sag might incline toward anything goes, regardless of cost (Venus in 2nd). With Mars square Jupiter he would have lots of energy. However, given the T-square from Pluto opposed Jupiter and square Mars, ruling the 6th, I suspect most of his energies went into his work, about which he may have been compulsive (Pluto).
He started as a writer (12th house, behind the scenes work) and from a very early age he wanted to be a magician (which uses tricks that no one is supposed to see –12th– and he would practice in private). He was also reported to be very shy off camera, and a very private person. (ASC co-ruler Mars in 12th) but professionally he was exceptionally well known (square Pluto in 9th of national publicity). It also may be that the Sun in the 12th keeps the ego hidden, and Johnny was great with skits that made him look silly. Also the Libra Sun progressed into Scorpio at around 6 months of age, so his first 30 years were strongly influenced by Scorpio, especially after the Sun entered the first house at age 5-6. His 10th house (ruled by Sun) Neptune in Leo might represent both entertainment and magic for his career. Leo must shine.
A New York Post article from 2013 claiming he had a severe drinking problem, perpetually chased women, and had a nasty temper that was easily set off. Now THAT fits. He is said to have blamed it all on his mother. (Mars square Moon in Capricorn in 3rd, ruler 9th) That was his philosophy! (9th)

Johnny Cash
Mars, Sun and Mercury are in the 12th House. Johnny Cash was one of the most iconic Country singers in the second half of the 20th century. Known as ‘the man in black’ – he always wore black as a tribute to the poor and disenfranchised (12th House and Pisces). He appealed to a huge cross-section of American culture. Cash was almost as famous for his addictions as his music. He had three planets, in Pisces in the 12th House, all in opposition to Neptune (ruler of Pisces) with Pisces on the cusp of the 12th house. It would take most of his life, and the love of his life (June Carter) to overcome the addictions.
Cash was also well known for playing concerts in prisons (truly 12th House). He played in Folsom and San Quentin, among others. He was often an outspoken advocate for Native Americans as well. He had a varied, prolific career, despite many setbacks. An attribute of Mars in the 12th House is often the ability to rise after a fall, and do so again and again.
Johnny and June Carter fell in love while married to other people. There were years of performing together in the public arena, while secretly sharing a private life (12th House). There was no question that June Carter was the love of his life. He became devoted to her. They were married for 35 years, producing children and music together. Johnny died less than four months after June in September, 2003.
Other public figures with Mars in the 12th house include: Donald Trump, Eleanor Roosevelt, Cat Stevens, Vincent Van Gogh, and Walt Whitman.

JUPITER IN THE 12TH HOUSE
JUPITER: is a business and harmonious planet. It is masculine, positive and electric (dignified and bold). It rules the liver and arterial system. Jupiter tends toward generosity, warmth and gentle expansion. It rules the RELIGIOUS URGES (benevolence, good cheer, hope and spirituality). Its best quality is BENEVOLENCE; worst quality is CONCEIT. Jupiter is known as “the Greater Benefic.” It is best expressed as JOVIALITY.*
JUPITER – KEY WORDS: Abundance, growth, generosity, enthusiasm, expansiveness, optimistic, laughter, motivation, wasteful, excessive.
HOW JUPITER MANIFESTS IN THE 12TH HOUSE
Below are Jupiter in the12th House tales from some of our Hermeticians contributing to this project:

Elizabeth I, Queen of England
Reign: 11/17/1558 – 3/24/1603
Jupiter is in the 12th House. Elizabeth was the daughter of King Henry VIII of England, and his second wife, Anne Boleyn. Henry defied the Catholic Church, separated from it, divorced his first wife, Catherine of Aragon and married Anne Boleyn. Two and one half years after Elizabeth’s birth, Henry annulled his marriage to Anne Boleyn and accused her of infidelity. She was beheaded and Elizabeth declared illegitimate.
Elizabeth’s 12th house both contains and is ruled by Jupiter (Sagittarius on the cusp). Jupiter squares her Virgo Sun, makes a wide opposition to Mars in Gemini, and sextiles Mercury in Libra. Jupiter in the 12th is an internal explorer with a love of knowledge and learning. It can also signify ostracism and confinement, both experienced by Elizabeth. Jupiter is often associated with royalty. Being ‘hidden’ in the 12th may have been Elizabeth’s protection during the early years.
Edward VI (half-brother to Elizabeth) succeeded Henry. Elizabeth was excluded from the line of succession. Upon the early death of Edward, Mary (Catholic half-sister to Elizabeth) ascends to the throne. At one point Elizabeth was imprisoned in the Tower by Mary. Mary releases Elizabeth, but banishes her (12th house). From a spiritual point of view, Jupiter in the 12th can signify unseen, even spiritual protection; which seems possible given her turbulent early years.
Elizabeth lived with Catherine Parr and her husband, Thomas Seymore. Although nothing was proven, there was suspicion of sexual abuse of the young (14 years old) royal by Seymore (another 12th house possibility, especially as Jupiter squares the Sun and opposes Mars).
Throughout her early years, Elizabeth was tutored by outstanding teachers (Jupiter). She may have been ostracized, but she was still Henry’s daughter. She had command of many languages, including English, French, Italian, Latin, Flemish, Greek and Spanish; and later in life, Welsh, Cornish, Scottish and Irish. One of her teachers and life-long advisors was John Dee. He was an English mathematician, astronomer, astrologer, and occult philosopher. He devoted much of his life to the study of alchemy, divination and Hermetic philosophy. Days before her death, an ailing Queen Mary finally accepted Elizabeth as her heir. Elizabeth’s coronation was January 15, 1559. Her progressed Sun was the most elevated planet in her chart, and was in an exact trine by transiting Jupiter. She was anointed and established as Supreme Governor of the Church of England.
In 1562 Elizabeth contracted small pox. It left her nearly bald and scarred her skin. Progressed Mars (in natal 6th house of health) was opposite progressed Jupiter (in the 12th). Transiting Jupiter was in her 6th making a square to natal Venus and transiting Saturn (ruler of her ascendant/1st house) was conjunct natal and progressed Uranus. She would use wigs and heavy makeup the rest of her life.
The religious battle (Jupiter in the 12th) between Catholicism (Queen Mary, and later Mary Queen of Scots) and Protestantism (Queen Elizabeth) would rage throughout Elizabeth’s reign. Though educated as a Protestant, Elizabeth tried early in her reign to use diplomacy between the two opposing factions. However, the Protestant faith was the national religion, with Elizabeth as its head, and she would defend it as such. Elizabeth systematically built up the military (navy). On July 29, 1588, the British navy defeated the Spanish Armada. Her progressed Sun was in the 10th house, trine natal Uranus in the 7th (public enemies). Progressed Mars was opposite her 12th house Jupiter. Transiting Pluto was trine progressed Venus in the 11th (friends, hopes and dreams). Elizabeth rallied the troops appearing in armour breast plate. (Progressed Mercury sextile progressed Jupiter.)
Elizabeth never married (Saturn and Uranus in the 7th). She was courted by European royalty for most of her life. She opted for mostly clandestine affairs (Jupiter in the 12th). Her most public affair was with Robert Dudley, but there was too much opposition to a marriage. And she refused to name a successor.
Conspiracies, secret enemies and assassination attempts on Elizabeth’s life (Jupiter in 12th) grew. Elizabeth was in great fear for her life from Catholic fanatics and foreign nationals. Rebellion was a constant threat. The Catholics, supported by France, believed Mary Queen of Scots was the rightful heir to the throne. Elizabeth employed a ‘master of spies,’ (12th house) Francis Walsingham (also Secretary of State), who operated with heavy-handed tactics. Torture and hideous methods of death were routine.
Although Mary Queen of Scots employed a vast network of spies and revolutionaries, there was no direct evidence that she was involved. It seems that Walsingham ‘entrapped’ Mary Queen of Scots in a conspiracy to assassinate Elizabeth. After much consideration, Elizabeth signed Mary’s death warrant. Mary was an ‘anointed’ Queen and it was a dangerous precedent to put a royal to death. One of Elizabeth’s aides delivered the death warrant without her permission. Mary was beheaded. Elizabeth was furious and went into a major depression. It seems that the ‘self-undoing’ of the 12th house played a part.
Elizabeth would rally and usher in an age of brilliance in literature and theater. Shakespeare and Marlow thrived at this time. The Elizabethan Era is one of the greatest in English history. It is difficult not to include more. As Elizabeth’s friends and advisors began to die, she once again moved into a depression. She became ill and died on March 24, 1603. Her reign is often called the Golden Age.

(see also Saturn)
Jupiter and Saturn are in the 12th House. Obama was the 44th president of the United States from 2009 to 2017. Jupiter is the strongest and most harmonious planet in his chart. With his story of the American Dream, despite his roots, the color of his skin (he is the first Black American to be elected and serve as president of the US), and so many other factors, he ascended to the office of leader of the free world. That is Jupiter. Jupiter appears to be hidden in his chart in a cadent house (12th House) and tempered by Saturn. But Obama’s 12th House is the most powerful and harmonious House in his chart. Both Jupiter and Saturn are in opposition to Mercury, square Neptune, but trine his Moon. There are plenty of character building aspects.
Obama’s presidency spanned two terms. His achievements include the financial recovery from the worst recession since the great depression: the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, The Affordable Care Act, making health care available and affordable to more Americans than ever before, the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, and many environmental and humanistic actions.
During the last six years of his presidency, the House and Senate turned to his opposing party: Republican. The Senate majority leader stated that his agenda was to make sure Obama failed. They refused to pass his legislation. The House voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act (known as Obamacare) more than 50 times (Saturn in the 12th – limits, losses). He was effective, in a more limited manner, despite his opposition.
He was respected by world leaders (Jupiter) and conducted his two-term presidency free from scandal. By the end of his presidency, Obama’s approval rating was at 60% (CNN).
Other public figures with Jupiter in the 12th house include: Alan Leo, Lord Byron, Buzz Aldrin, and Ram Das.

SATURN IN THE 12TH HOUSE
SATURN: is a business and discordant planet. It is masculine, negative and magnetic. It rules the bones, cartilage and spleen. Saturn tends toward being practical and concrete and rules the SAFETY URGES (secrecy, acquisitiveness, covetousness, causality and comparison). Its best quality is SYSTEM; worst quality is SELFISHNESS. It is best expressed as CRYSTALLIZATION.*
SATURN – KEY WORDS: Organization, order, resistance to change, boundaries, segregation, conservative, authority, systems, discipline, patience, loss, limits.
HOW SATURN MANIFESTS IN THE 12TH HOUSE
Below are Saturn in the 12th House tales from some of our Hermeticians contributing to this project:
- I have Saturn in the 12th House in Aquarius, retrograde. Lynne Palmer interpreted this combination to be depression behind closed doors. She was very accurate. I have bipolar 2, and I have had a therapist since I was 16 years old. When I am very depressed, I seclude myself and refuse to come out of my hole till I am better. I do not like group therapy. I prefer to let only one person know my most private of thoughts. If I choose to let my friends know what is happening in my life, it is on my terms. I have shared my history of depression with classmates at the university, friends at the Church of Light, and others. Bipolar 2 symptoms are obvious to my Friends. It is like a light switch being turned off and on. I call it Tigger vs. Eeyore (Winnie the Pooh characters). I am usually either happy, excitable Tigger or low-key depressed Eeyore.
I also have Jupiter in Pisces, retrograde in the 12th house. I think the Jupiter can mean I like to be by myself sometimes and enjoy some privacy and alone time.

(see also Sun and Neptune)
Uranus (Inharmony in Aries) is in the first house conjunct Pluto (Harmony) in Aries. He was the determined and original eccentric, inventor to the masses.
His Sun, at 12 Pisces is in the decanate of Self-Sacrifice. Saturn is in the Verity decanate of Pisces which is associated with the quality of wanting to understand Nature. Neptune is in the Aquarius decanate of Repression. These influences seem to link to his need to strive ahead in service to others, in a self-sacrificing way with an idealistic, utopian need to work with restrictions (Saturn - loss of hearing) and working for those in institutes (12th house).
The Moon in 7th House in opposition to his Sun and ASC, also relates to Bell's marriage disputes and also to his open and also secret enemies that he had.
He was a reserved sensitive man by nature, and this relates to Sun and Neptune in his 12th and by restrictive Saturn avoiding social contact, who was quiet and introspective even in early education. Early life experiences may have led him on to his most notorious work to do with deafness, as indeed his own Mother suffered from the encroaching and restrictive nature of the disease when he was young. Bell worked himself to the point of exhaustion with his experiments to overcome deafness. Worried (Pisces 12th) that his work would be discovered by others, he hid his notes by locking them away (also 12th House, and also secret enemies is 12th House). In fact he did indeed have secret enemies regarding this, and there was a race to the patent office. Even the US Government moved to annul Bell's patent on grounds of fraud that went to the Supreme Court and after long legal battles, leaving it as undecided…it's all a bit 12th House, especially with restrictive Saturn, vague Neptune and the Sun conjunction the ASC and opposite the Moon as part of the T-square affliction to cusp of 10th/ MC.
Other inventions of Bell's are rarely mentioned and only then apparently as in collaboration with others. Some of these are somewhat Neptunian by nature as his 'Photophone' is in some way a moving-pictures type idea, and his 'Metal detector' is somewhat 12th House as being something to detect hidden things. His Hydrofoil invention could also be classed as somewhat Neptunian as Neptune co-rules Pisces and the Oceans. Bell died from diabetes and affliction with pernicious Anemia 08/02/1922. Looking to Doris Chase Doane under "Anemia" and also "Diabetes"; Neptune and Saturn prominent, and usually severely afflicted. Mars also afflicted (as is here by square to Uranus and semi-square to Neptune), losing consciousness after a long illness (Saturn in 12th).
NOTE: Interestingly an afflicted prominent Moon (Moon dominated chart here) and Saturn are related to Deafness.

Saturn and Jupiter are in the 12th House. Saturn’s role in Obama’s life is not as evident as Jupiter, but it is profound. Obama’s parents divorced when he was 2 years old. His father moved to his native Kenya. (Separation, Saturn). He would only see his father one more time. He was uprooted and moved with his mother to Indonesia. She sent him back to Hawaii to live with his grandparents when Obama was 10 (another separation) out of concern for his safety (Saturn) and education. Obama was 21 when his father died; 34 when his mother died. His grandmother died 2 days before Obama was elected president of the United States (Saturn – loss). It is said that "Saturn builds the character we need; Jupiter showcases that character".

URANUS IN THE 12TH HOUSE
URANUS: is the higher octave of Mercury; an intellectual and convertible planet. It is harmonious or discordant according to the aspects it receives from the other planets. It has no sex and is electromagnetic (attracting and repelling). It rules the electromagnetic body and the INDIVIDUALISTIC URGES (independence, originality, inventiveness and unconventionality). Its best quality is ORIGINALITY; worst quality is ECCENTRICITY. It is best expressed as DISRUPTIVE.*
URANUS – KEY WORDS: Original, inventive, independent, unconventional, change, surprises, sudden and unexpected change, freedom, the new, breakthroughs.
HOW URANUS MANIFESTS IN THE 12TH HOUSE
Below are Uranus in the 12th House tales from some of our Hermeticians contributing to this project:
- My chart shows the 12th House occupied by Uranus; 11 degrees conjunct the ascendant, square Neptune in the 4th, and square the MC. It is no secret, people think I’m a bit odd or eccentric, even strange. But my forthright intentions usually overcome this. This, of course, is the urge that led me to the occult, the hidden, the esoteric, the mysteries, astrology, etc., as well. It is middle chart in power, and positive. But the 12th House is just over the negative side.
I have dealt with prisons, hospitals, institutions, pretty much most of my life, and only lately being an unwilling tenant of the hospitals. This day alone, I spend a great deal of time in hospitals and nursing homes…inspecting them!
But the one that gets me time and time again is the unexpected person that comes out of the woodwork to make a false claim about me; that takes time and increased effort to thwart or explain. These false claims and insinuations are costly and often create temporary ruin of my reputation. It gets cleared in time, every time, but the people that cause it never know, or if they do, don’t care. Example: one co-worker observed my ring with occult symbols on it. He went to the boss to say he had personal knowledge that I was involved with satanic activity. This was against policy and the personal beliefs of the guy in charge. My defense was useless. I had it [ring] on and it was occult symbols. That was all that was needed. It was eventually resolved in my favor. It was freedom of speech and allowed by the laws, and therefore policies to the contrary were nullified. Stating nothing to do with satanic activity only increased their belief in the lie. But the guy that came out of the woodwork had no real cause other than he just wanted to make trouble. He soon left.
This similar event seems to happen just about every time there is an aspect to Uranus or the MC, which is very powerful and very negative in my chart. This might be the self-undoing that comes from the 12th. I attract this myself, and until it can be alchemized, it will continue.
Or maybe it is just getting a little better from years of alchemizing. People are coming out of the woodwork lately wanting to know more about the occult. They don’t know me from Adam, but they heard about my reputation. Two sides to the dilemma of the 12th.

Moon and Uranus are in the 12th house with the Moon in opposition to Venus. An actress, known for her stunning beauty, Farrah was raised in a traditional Catholic family and educated in parochial schools. Throughout her life, she won acclaim for her beauty and was recruited by a Hollywood agent while in college
She successfully acted on television but explosive and unexpected international success came when her now-famous red swimsuit poster was published. Uranus, ruling sudden change of fortune, is in the 12th house and is co-ruler of the 9th house of publishing. It is also part of a grand trine with the Sun in the 8th house and Neptune in 4th. Interestingly, from many images that were produced in a publicity photo-shoot, she personally chose the poster image. This personal involvement in the photo selection is characteristic of the Sun involvement in the grand trine. Of course Neptune's involvement in the grand trine capitalized on the fantasy element of the photo. However, even with the good fortune associated with the grand trine, one can't help but wonder if the sudden rise to fame doesn't come with an element of self-undoing associated with the 12th house. Perhaps this young woman from a conventional environment in conservative Texas was not psychologically prepared for the sudden flash of power and notoriety.

He was born with erratic, unconventional Uranus (retrograde) in his 12th house (handicaps) in the health and service sign of Virgo, conjoined his ASC. His Aquarian Sun in the 5th (ruler 12th) is conjoined Venus, and square Saturn, Neptune and Jupiter in the 8th.
Stricken with Polio at age 39 (the Virgo Uranus in 12th wide square Mars in mobile Gemini in the 10th and co-ruling the 3rd of mobility, and Sun (ruler of 12th) square Saturn and Neptune in the 8th reflecting limitations and disease affecting his vitality. Roosevelt thought his political career was over, but his wife Eleanor encouraged him to go forward. He used modern medical (Uranus in Virgo) leg braces (mechanics = Mars) to hide (12th) his disability (12th), insisting he appear able-bodied in public (Mars in 10th).
During his early life he did not fit in with the other students who excelled in athletics because he did not. (Uranus square Mars). 12th ruler the Sun square Saturn also reflects his lack of ability in sports (Sun in the 5th). Although I didn’t find reference to it, I would be surprised if he wasn’t a bit of a klutz! Uranus is not a strong planet in his chart, having little strength of expression in the 12th and few aspects. But the square with powerful Mars in his 10th (public, career) and co-ruling the 3rd of mobility reflects the fact that his disability was widely known despite his efforts to hide it.
FDR was elected (Mars in 10th) an unprecedented (Uranus) four times, which is exceptional (Uranus conjoined ASC). His last term cost him his life (Uranus in self-undoing 12th square Mars in 10th, ruler of the 8th of death, and closely trine Jupiter and Neptune in the 8th). Also, the Sun (ruler 12th of self-undoing) was square Saturn (limitations), Neptune and Jupiter in the 8th and Saturn was co-ruler of the 6thHis health was poor prior to re-election, but he felt the country needed him due to the ongoing war. His death was attributed to being too ill to withstand the ongoing pressures of the office.
Roosevelt “had led the US through an economic depression and the greatest war in human history. A whole generation of Americans had grown up knowing no other president. His social programs during the Great Depression redefined the role of government in Americans’ lives. His role during WWII established the US’ leadership on the world stage.” (Biography.com)

John Travolta
Uranus in the 12th House is trine Mercury and square Neptune. Both Uranus and the 12th House are moderate in power in Travolta’s chart, but they played a pivotal role in his life. He dropped out of high school, with his parents’ blessing, and pursued an acting and dancing career. His mother was a drama coach and seemed to recognize very early that John had exceptional ability. His breakout role was on television in the series Welcome Back Kotter. Movies would follow.
At the age of 22, John had a May-December romance with a much older woman (Saturn, ruler of John’s 7th House, trine Venus). He was devoted to her. They were together until she died (Uranus co-ruler of his 8th House).
John has always followed his own path (Uranus). He became a devotee of Scientology. He credited Scientology with re-starting his career in the 90’s (Jupiter in T-square to his Mercury and Moon; Uranus trine Mercury). John is an accomplished pilot (Uranus). He owns several jets, including a 707.
John has become recognized as a brilliant talent capable of playing diverse and unusual roles (Uranus trine Mercury and square Neptune). He has been described as ‘electric’ (Uranus). His appeal is universal (Pluto oppose Sun/Venus in the 8th House).
Other public figures with Uranus in the 12th house include: Edgar Cayce, Elvis Presley, Adolf Hitler, and Theodore Roosevelt.

Alexander Graham Bell
(see also Sun and Saturn)
We use Bell’s chart three times in this report. This is due, not only to his three planets in the 12th House—Neptune, Sun and Saturn—but to the strong expression of his genius as well.
Neptune is harmonious, but only of moderate power in his chart. It is, however, one end of a 7 planet stellium, in 3 signs, encompassing the 12th and 1st Houses of his chart. That is a lot of concentrated power. It leads us to believe that Bell was exceptionally comfortable in his own company; most likely preferred it. Neptune’s contribution to this mix goes beyond imagination. It opens the psyche to inspiration, perhaps on a regular basis. His dreams probably bridged the conscious mind to the sub-conscious (3 planets in Pisces, including Sun and Mercury, and the Ascendant).
His Sun, 12 degrees Pisces/self-sacrificing, Saturn and Neptune in his 12th House (cusp 01 degrees Aquarius/Originality) also links somewhat to his need to strive ahead in service to others, in a self-sacrificing way with an idealistic, Utopian need, a knowing (Neptune 28 degrees Aquarius/Repression) and an over-riding but restricted belief (Saturn 04 degrees Pisces/Verity) and working for those in institutes with the vagueness and restricted nature of deafness.
Some of his inventions are somewhat Neptunian by nature, as his 'photophone' is in some way a moving-pictures type idea, and his 'metal detector' is somewhat 12th House as being something to detect hidden things. His hydrofoil invention could also be classed as somewhat Neptunian, as Neptune co-rules Pisces and the Oceans.

Salvador Dali
Neptune and Pluto are in the 12th House. Dali was a highly imaginative (Neptune in the 12th), surrealist painter of the 20th century. He began life in a very Neptunian manner. Dali was born less than a year after his older brother, less than two years old, died. Dali was given the same name (Salvador), was dressed in his clothes and ultimately believed he was the reincarnation of his brother.
Dali was an eccentric and took delight in being so. He often dressed in a bizarre fashion, and became known for his long, skinny, twirled mustache. He was as much a personality as an artist (Neptune in 12th opposed Uranus). He was shy and had many fears. He was superstitious and wore talismans for protection.
Dali painted vivid landscapes early in his career. But it was when he began painting surreal dreamscapes (Neptune) that he excelled and drew attention. He became as famous for his eccentric dress and manner as his paintings. His personal relationships sustained him. He married an older woman who took charge of his professional as well as personal life. He matured as an artist. The marriage lasted 47 years (Venus trine Uranus and sextile Neptune.)
Other public figures with Neptune in the 12th house include: Warren Beatty, Shirley MacLaine, Leonard Bernstein, and Edgar Degas.

PLUTO IN THE 12TH HOUSE
PLUTO: is the higher octave of the Moon; a social and convertible planet, discordant or harmonious depending on the aspects it received from other planets. It is either positive and electric, or more commonly negative and magnetic. Pluto rules lower-level forces which are destructive and insidious. When the energy is redirected to express upper-level Pluto forces, they are the finest and most spiritual of all. It rules the spiritual body and the UNIVERSAL WELFARE URGES. It is the inner-plane planet and the planet of Transitional ESP. Its best quality is SPIRITUALITY; worst quality is INVERSION. It is best expressed as COOPERATION.*
PLUTO – KEY WORDS: Power, the underworld, gangsters and racketeers, Saints and sinners, death, destruction, and renewal, decay, transformation, sexuality, the ‘phoenix’ that rises from the ashes, transcendent spirituality.

Kurt Cobain
Cobain's chart shows Uranus and Pluto are conjunct in the 12th House while also making close conjunction to the ASC. Adding to the potential disruptive influence of this configuration on his personality, there is a close T-square to the MC and opposition to the planets in the 7th. This chart also indicates over-emphasis of watery emotions (8 planets in water signs) and Mutable qualities (6 planets, MC and ASC). With Saturn in the Vicissitudes decanate of Pisces, there is a possibility he was the embodiment of the feelings of confinement and desire for freedom with which his endearing fans in the Grunge Movement claimed.
Kurt Cobain, the leader of the most popular of the grunge bands, Nirvana, had it really rough right from the start. This is reflected in the music that he and others similar to his style put forth. The underlying 'Mood' was depressing and about staying “down” rather than doing something about it! Given the T-square involving his personality in opposition to Saturn in Pisces, it makes sense he would express this type of emotion.
One of the several Grand Water Trines in his chart seems to link his vitality (Sun) and subconscious (Moon) fulfillment of Power thought-cells and desires gained from a natural vocation (Sun in 6th) trine to his innate vocalization skills and artistic imagination (Neptune in Scorpio in 3rd) and the achievement of honors and fame accordingly, trine Jupiter and conjunct Moon 10th.
He was a 'hyperactive child' and from his early years he was linked to disruption and drug dependency. There's plenty of rebellious potential with Uranus ℞ conjunct Pluto ℞ in the 12th conjunct ASC opposing Saturn in the 7th (sign of Inharmony) in Pisces/Vicissitudes. He had 'issues'/disputes with his Inner-Plane World and the Outside world a plenty.
The erosive, corrosive, disruptive, radical and eccentric potential for sudden changes is also seen in the opposition to Venus (conjunct Saturn) in the 7th. This suggests problems with females. This is reflected early in his life by his relationship with his Mom and is seen in other relationships with women. Controversy surrounds his relationship with his wife Courtney Love.

Orenthal James (OJ) Simpson
Pluto and Saturn are in the 12th House. OJ Simpson was a talented, beloved sports figure (football player) in the U.S. He won the Heisman trophy, set NFL records and became very rich endorsing commercial products and small movie roles. He was also known as a ladies’ man. This cost him his first marriage and was rumored to have contributed to the end of his second to Nicole Brown Simpson. OJ also had a record for domestic abuse (Nicole).
On June 12, 1994, Nicole Brown (now divorced from OJ) and her friend, Ron Goldman, were brutally murdered outside of her house. After a dramatic, (manipulative Pluto in the 12th) slow car chase on the Los Angeles freeways, OJ was arrested for the murders. Pluto and Saturn in the 12th house were major players as a long, coercive trial played out. Simpson had a team of celebrity lawyers, known as the “dream team.” With every courtroom scene was televised, the nation was transfixed. The question of his guilt or innocence divided the country. In the end, OJ was acquitted. Many thought, and still think, that OJ was guilty, but he was now free to take custody of his children and get on with his life.
After the trial, OJ continued to have unrelated legal problems. Then, in 2007 he was arrested in Las Vegas on various counts of robbery, assault, kidnapping, and burglary with a deadly weapon. He and several co-defendants were accused of breaking into a hotel room to steal sports memorabilia; items OJ claimed belonged to him. He was found guilty and is currently serving time in prison (12th House).
A possible interpretation of Saturn in the 12th House is karmic action; what we send out returns to us (what goes around comes around). Then add negative Pluto in the 12th and we have a person who is used to power, and, perhaps, the misuse of this power. OJ was granted parole in 2017. How will he use his freedom? The possibility of transformation (Pluto) is a beacon of hope.
Other public figures with Pluto in the 12th house include: Marilyn Monroe, Mark Spitz, Margaret Mead, Jonathan Winters, Muhammad Ali, Donald Trump, and Salvador Dali.
