The word Alchemy is Arabic, derived from "al," the, and "kimia," hidden, or occult. To the Arabians alchemy was the science of hidden properties and essences. It dealt with the occult attributes of things.
Over time it has been linked through association with the art of transmutation. A long line of alchemical experiments sought to change base metals into gold. In addition they sought the philosopher's stone, the elixir of life, and the accomplishment of the great work.
These sciences, brought to Europe by Arabian scholars, were not universally welcomed. The Church allowed certain monks like Placidus de Titus and Friar Roger Bacon to delve deeply into astrology and magic, but generally this was considered to be trafficking with the devil.
It was not an age of free speech. As a result a language of symbolism had to be developed. Astrology and alchemy arrived in Europe together. A language that was applicable to one was likewise applicable to the other. Astrology teaches that everything on earth has its correspondence in the sky, and everything in the sky has its correspondence on the earth. It was a natural evolution that astrological language became the key to alchemical synonyms.
Sifting through the alchemist's writings reveal that a variety of ends were sought. Some wanted material gold; some sought magnetic power while others sought to establish ecstatic rapport with the source of al life, light and love to the end of transmuting the gross trials of life into golden spiritual treasures. What is important is that whatever the end sought, the process is always the same.
Thus it is that the Art and Science of Alchemy comes to The Brotherhood of Light Courses. Its application in this system is for the purpose of transformation of character and culture. We begin with the individual but the ultimate goal is to transform the planet into a healthier and happier place to live.
As a science, Alchemy is the means by which we take astrological knowledge and convert discords into harmony. For example, in alchemy we learn that a discordant Mars can be converted by the application of Lunar or Moon energy. The exact application of this can be learned from The Church of Light's Alchemy course books. This is an exciting field of study and a must for anyone who wishes to derive benefit from their astrological and magical studies.
